Description

Purpose:

To be informed of the responsibilities of the OGC Dental Clinic, providing professional dental services in the OGC Dental Clinic. Management of the College students in Dental Hygiene or Dental Assistant Programs.

 

Supervisory Relationship:

e Administration supervision by the Director of Healthcare Services.

Hours of Operation: M - Th, 8:00am - 4:00pm

e Primarily Monday through Friday day shift. Salaried exempt position. On call coverage provided 24 hours per day unless other coverage arranged

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Performs clinical dental services for patients which includes cleanings, examinations and treatment planning, oral cancer screenings, amalgam and composite restorations, pit and fissure sealants, bonded restorations, extractions, dentures or other required procedures.

All procedures using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications and surgical implements.

  • Requests consultation when appropriate in all aspects of dental care.

Provides instruction to patients and to caretaker in proper practices of dental hygiene and in procedures pertinent to provided treatments.

  • Responds to inquiries by patients and their caretakers and staff on dental health and on provided treatments.

Provides preventive dental services to patients such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth.

  • Ensures all billing items are turned in to the Insurance Biller in a timely fashion with accurate and appropriate charges.

Identified and helps to develop contracts with community healthcare agencies and individuals participating in the OGC Dental Clinic

Supervise all Dental Education programs relating to staff, families and client.

Supports the community dentists' interest in treating patients with special needs. Attend the Medical/Dental Committee monthly meeting, advising or bringing concerns and issues that may need direction or support.

Represents Orange Grove Center to the community and the state of any requested presentation for Developmental disability issues in a professional and dignified manner.

Any duty as assigned.

Works with the HCS Director to assure that quality standards of Dental Health care are adhered to within the Center.

Strict confidentiality in maintaining patient dental records accurately and in a timely manner managing and maintaining stock and equipment.

Keeping abreast of new developments through structured continuing evaluation; in learning new skills and acquiring licensure in needed area as stated in the practice ACT to maintain licensure.

Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
Supervises all Dental Educational programs relating to the training of dental students.
Reports any dental hygienist students or dental assistant students who have been in violation of program policies and procedures.
Works in a collaborative environment with college personnel from extremal organizations.
Directs professional and auxiliary (e.g. dental hygienist and assistants) staff during treatment of clients. Monitors skill and professionalism when dealing with clients.

 

Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications:

Education and/or Equivalent Experiences:

Graduation from an accredited dental school with a DDS or  DMD degree.

The school must be accredited by the American Association of Dental Education.

or Certifications Required:

Requires a current license to practice dentistry in the State of Tennessee. Current DEA for the purpose of writing prescriptions also required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of principles and practices of modern dentistry and of prevention of dental diseases.

  • Knowledge of the structure and function of community health centers.

Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to dentistry community health centers, and public dental health.

Skill in performance of dental treatments.

  • Skills in communicating effectively with patients and their caretakers, as well as families.

Interpersonal skills establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other OGC employees, outside dental patients, general public and any representatives of external organization.

Experience:

Clinically relevant experience required. Experience with persons that have disabilities preferred.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Health must be adequate, both mentally and physically, to allow for efficient accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibility. Placement screening physical examination including report of TB skin test, or chest x-ray is required as a part of the employment process. The job will involve periods of sitting at a desk or dental station, standing and a moderate amount of walking on concrete floors. The job may require lifting with assistance of another adult.
