The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) manages the state’s adult prison system, community supervision, and reentry programs. We look to serve justice, promote positive behavioral change, manage safe and humane facilities, and lower recidivism through rehabilitation.

Responsibilities:

• Primary Care & Management: Assess, diagnose, and treat uncomplicated acute and stable chronic health conditions.

• Sick Call & Operations: Manage daily operations of outpatient or inpatient departments and run daily sick call clinics.

• Patient Education: Focus on health promotion, disease prevention, patient counseling, and continuity of care.

• Collaborative Practice: Make patient management decisions in coordination with physicians and established clinical guidelines.

• Emergency & Diagnostic Care: Provide initial emergency triage, perform and interpret diagnostic tests, and manage medical or surgical emergencies until higher-level support arrives.

• Security Duties: Maintain institutional security as a primary responsibility that supersedes clinical duties on a regular and recurring basis


Requirements:

• Licensure: Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional registered nurse (RN).

• Education & Certification: Graduate degree in nursing and national nurse practitioner certification.

• Citizenship & Credentialing: U.S. citizenship and successful completion of formal agency credentialing, medical evaluations, and background checks.

• Grade Levels: Typically hired at the GS-09 or GS-11 levels (or higher depending on experience) through direct-hire or competitive notices on USAJOBS.
